ointers which guide the viewers attention to a specific region or object in an art work are often joined to a swing line like the spokes of a wheel which has "blown apart".

Here is a not too subtle example by Rubens (of course). I believe he made some of my examples just so a student or teacher could point them out. More often than not the artist attempts to make these devices less obvious.

Explicit technical mechanisms in an artwork (such as the ones given herein) may detract from the impact of the work itself because the audience will consciously look at these details instead of the philosophical aspect which is why the artist painted the thing in the first place.
