his is my proposed solution for setting up an easily navigated video store ... not by date ... not alphabetically ... but rather ... by content. To an extent they do this already ... action here ... comedy there ... toons in another place. But they don't go far enough and further they corrupt it by alphabetical listing within the category. Enough already.|
Alphabetical listing assumes that you know already the name of the film you want to watch. This is fine for new releases but most of the time ... I just have an idea of what type of thing I'm looking for ... what I'm in the mood to see.
What I would like to experience in a video store ...
Serious on one side of the store ... funny on the opposite side.
On the left side - realistic ... on the right - fantasy.
Toward the top of the shelf - the "A" movie ... on the bottom - the "B" movies.
Let the floor be color coded:
Bright colors for the cheerful ... dark for the somber.
This just follows the above scheme.
And there should be some numbering system on that floor (Cartesian coordinates) so that I can still find a title by name from an alphabetical listing in a book by the door.
What the video store lacks (and which the library USED to have ... before the computerized "tunnel vision" scheme) is ... serendipity. This totally stupid word denotes something that we all wish to have in our lives ... to discover something wonderful yet unexpected.
I have seen only a small percentage of films available to me. I can never see all of them. There are too many of them and they are making more of them at an increasing pace. The ones I do see have been "preselected" for me by market forces and the personal preferences of unnamed, unknown "bigwigs". If I cannot have total exposure, I prefer a more random exposure than I now get. That way there is more chance of finding something enjoyable but off the beaten path.
I would like to go to the video and just enjoy the hunt
LIKE I USED TO IN THE LIBRARY WHICH HAS BEEN DESTROYED BY THE REMOVAL OF THE CARD CATALOG AND ITS REPLACEMENT WITH THAT INANE TUNNEL VISION COMPUTER SYSTEM WHICH IS THE REASON I NEVER GO TO THE LIBRARY ANYMORE AND WILL NEVER GO AGAIN IN THE FUTURE GODDAMMIT.
