General vs Anomaly Looking at pictures of Martian features, the scientific community is most interested in the general principles of planetary development. They look at such things as cratering, lava flows, mountain building, possible water sources & sinks, the plains, polar ice caps, etc. Amateurs, on the other hand, know that nothing exotic or earth shaking will be discovered here. We look to the anomalous features. Here is where there is true potential for the "really, big shew". Fortunately, Mars has provided a plethora of peculiar pictures to pic perspicacious people's pervasive, (but) preconceived perceptions pertaining to possible (perhaps plentiful ... and even ... pulchritudinous - though ponderous) Platyhelminthes and their plexus of pliable pathways. Put that in your piehole ;o) Arthur C. Clark has begun castigating the scientific community for neglecting what to him are the most interesting pictures so far found in our solar system. Nothing is being said. The ostrich is doing his thing ... as expected. Because of this abrogation of responsibility, you, the average guy, can fill the vacuum and do the scientific research to find "life on Mars". Just go to the Mars Global Surveyor Images site and download some pics ... or ... download the raw data from Mars as well as the decompression program and viewer ... and ... start lookin'. There are tens of thousands of pictures ... plenty enough for everyone. Experience the thrill of discovery (or self-delusion ;o) for yourself. What I am posting here are my deductions based on the facts of the pictures, the physics of Mars, and basic biological facts known from earth. The end result is rather shocking (even to me) ... but what can I do but follow the trail where it leads? I've gone back over it many times to see if I've made some horrendous error ... and found nothing of consequence. This must be basically true ... or ... what? I don't know. The whole thing seems impossible ... we're way past improbable here. I'm naming the creatures after Richard Hoagland (one could make the case for Bill Weller too). I just think of them in my own mind as "Hoagies" rather than "Welps". What the hay? ... as long as they're not named after me ;o) If I'm proven wrong in any of my deductions ... that's great. I'm quite uncomfortable with this model as it is. It's just tooooooooooooooooo bizarre ... even for me.
The Story ... There have been found in the Mars pictures these "tubes" often referred as glass tubes because they are translucent or even transparent. There are miles and miles of them ... some mostly buried ... a few completely exposed as in these pics. The diameter of the ubiquitous tubes is tremendous ... 20-40 meters in general. That's about big enough to put two interstate highways through. Supposedly, they are exposed through the mechanism of geological weathering of the surface. This gives them the possible (and acceptable to the scientific establishment) geologic explanation. I shall show conclusively that these tunnels are not geologic. This leaves us with the awesome conclusion that they have another origin of which there are only two possibilities ... they are organic ... or ... they are artificial. My conclusion is organic. Let us proceed. Here are the "Hoagy" tunnels or "glass tubes" with some comments. See if you can spot a fault in my reasoning along the way. Am I not seeing this right? Just ... what? |
M1104220-A  Observe the clear, see-through nature of the tubes. Here is a complete oval going all the way around the tube. Most of the "bracing" can only be seen in part. But no matter at what angle any brace from any tube is viewed, it impresses us as being a circle around the whole tube. Here, part of the outer sleeve appears to be disrupted and-or missing.
This section seems to have detritus (or ... "connective" material seen elsewhere) on the high side and the outer sheath is also missing.
The Logical Consequences are horrible to deal with. A tunnel invariably carries some sort of traffic whether it be animal, vegetable or mineral. What is passing? What was passing? Perhaps the tunnel is water filled. This is impossible because of the size of the tube and the gravitational force at the surface of Mars. The gravity is about 40 percent of Earth. Since the tubes are 20-50 meters in diameter ... having water in them ... hung from a wall ... get real. There is nothing in the universe strong enough to hold them up there. These tubes must be very light indeed ... to be so big. The same is true of the hoagy itself. It cannot be "like a whale", i.e. a solid creature. It would collapse of its own weight. Even an earthly whale, if removed from the bouyancy of water can't breathe. These animals are on the order of two hundred feet tall and ten football fields long. They make the aircraft carrier "Enterprise" look like a Piper Cub next to a 747 Jumbo jet. A hoagy's size (coupled with the Martian gravitational field) is inconsistent with any terrestrial life form. In fact, I conjecture that a hoagy is more genetically related to a GoodYear blimp than to any earth animal. That's correct. It must be a giant gas bag. I propose that its primary gas is "water vapor". Water ... the necessity of life ... scarce on Mars ... hold on to it ... as long as possible.
Returning to the tube's construction ...
I believe that the shape of the tube is maintained by gas pressure as much as by the ribbing structures.
Further, the stuff of which the tube is made is all the same. Sort of cartilaginous organic substance ... easily bendable but not as easily stretchable ... not much like rubber. I believe it would be the same material with which the hoagy's body is constructed.
The hoagies themselves are dark in color ... completely opaque. If we consider that the tunnel is constructed of the same organic material as the hoagy, why is it transparent? I propose that the living animal has a circulatory system with some sort of blood similar to us. However, when the tubes are constructed by the hoagies they leave as little nutrients in the material as possible ... and ... certainly would remove any blood from the construction. What I am getting at here is that the tube is actually the outer skin or covering of the hoagy which (unlike earthly organisms) is utilized in tunnel making instead of being discarded (molting) ... a new tunnel section if you will. Evidence for this would consist of tunnel variations at about one hoagy body length, i.e. about one kilometer. Presumably the new tunnel section would be attached to the older sections using "mouth secretions" and pattern fitting by eating the excess material to a perfect fit. We must surmise a mouth at the front and anus at the rear for fundamental biological reasons. And ... the tube is attached to the wall by some sort of "secreted resin" ala "Aliens" and this must come out of the mouth opening since these creatures clearly have no appendages (at least none visible in the picture). Don't have the number of this picture of possible hoagies. This is a "weller" of hoagies. What are they doing? They are wellering. What is wellering? Whatever they are doing. Mating ... feeding ... taking the sun ... trading Pokemon cards ... just whatever. Easy to falsify a worm hypothesis from this picture ... just take another picture of the same place to see if they've "moved". If not, they are geological or ... improbably ... dead & frozen. Looks like some sort of giant leeches. There is some evidence of partially uncovered "tubes". They appear to be coming out of the ground ... don't they? Or ... going back in? Very strange pic ... considering the proposed size - about one kilometer in length ... yet this is what the "tubes" imply.

Rather unusual dunes !.
It is odd that they don't mix with the surrounding sand and remain extremely dark relative to other features. They seem to have a rounded crossection rather than a wide, inverted "V" shape. Even the white "dunes" don't seem to mix with the surrounding sand (they wouldn't if they are Hoagy constructions).
What are they doing?
Some guesses.
What can be done to prove or disprove this hypothesis?
Obviously, if another picture of the same place shows them still in this position ... that would pretty well disprove the hypothesis that they are living ... wouldn't it? Living things move and though I'm sure these Hoagies won't compete in the Kentucky Derby ... after days have passed they must move someplace ... completely. If they were so slow as not to be able to move in 24 hours (the approximate Martian day) ... they wouldn't be able to respond properly to their changing environment and nature would not have produced them.
I will construct another page delving into the body of the Hoagy itself very soon ... locomotion, tunnel building, etc. I fully intend to "fan this fire" for all it is worth. I consider it of great importance ... if not of and unto itself ... for breaking the philosophical logjam which presently is holding up most fundamental science, i.e. not thinking out of the box.

I propose that gas trapped in the compartment formed by the outer sleeve and the inner corrugated sleeve holds some of the tube form like a blow up beach toy or kids wading pool.
The ribs are thicker at the point of attachment to the outer sleeve and thinnest where they connect to each other. This gives them a whitish appearance with translucent space between two adjacent ribs. 
It is also conceivable that the ribs are not connected and merely support the structure by shape and thickness in this manner. They need to be flexible so that the animal can push its way through.
