"Provided that no one actually picks up a sword and lops your head off with it ..."

Then the written word might overpower swords through the mechanism of undercutting the prevalent philosophy and replacing it with another.
The unstated goal of all modern "noisepapers" is social masterbation. The same is true of their progeny: the Mragazines and the ubiquitous Telefoolavision.
From a purely commercial perspective, noisepapers are an attempt to "push woodpulp", i.e. "What can we do to make people buy our worthless tree mash? ... I know ... We'll cover it with "swill" and the pigs will eat it up!"
And you do ... You are the pig.
Now, if you do not wish to continue to "suck swill" and be a pig read on and be "cured".
What all reporters and TV people wish to do in life is "guide the development of civilization" without the expedient of getting elected or earning the respect and trust of the public. That's all. Well ... ya know ... they know what's best for us. It is true ... isn't it?
The next time you see a reporter render an opinion on the TV ... Ask yourself this question.
What have you done in life that's so great as to warrant inserting your opinion into my mind? And that is exactly what a reporter does when he makes comment or 'shades' the meaning of events so as to highlight those factors which are important to him. So also is the choice of what story to relate. Who are you to decide which of many events are important enough to cover?
When you watch a news program you might wonder why the opinion of someone running a tv news station (for profit) is important but the opinion of someone running an industrial manufacturing plant (for profit) is not. Why? Why are other opinions "iced" as though meaningless? Why do those who are seen on screen and consequently recognized by many people to be considered important? Can you see your way through this? If you can you are not one of the aforementioned pigs anymore! Congratulations ...The answer has always been ... "Well, somebody's gotta do it." And this is true. If most reporters were right thinking moral individuals content to let the news speak for itself and we were able to choose from a multitude of sources ... everything would work out all right in the long run.
But the media has an agenda.
That agenda is both injurious and comical.
It injures civilization because there are so many worthy, wonderful and important things that people are never informed of. By "going for the numbers" all those things which educate and uplift civilization are lost to us. It is comical because their attempts to "jerk off" the public fail so miserably ... actually ... all the time. They never succeed in causing a nationwide orgasm as they would like. They get "tuned out" on such a regular basis you would think that they had the sex appeal of a 600 pound woman.
Examples:
Wow, gee ... I'm ... shocked ... and you learned that in only four years? ...
The true definition of "news" ...
