Rule by Individual Judgement

T
he greatest single cause of human political misfortune is the attempt of an individual to drive the ship of state like a speedboat. Any political entity the size of a country must be moved in the manner of a super-tanker ... planning for any course correction many miles in advance.

The individual who manages to wrest the controls away from representative government (consensus government), believes himself to be super-human by virtue of the fact that he has wrested that control. That is, if fate, God or some super-natural agency did not underwrite his position then how is it that he obtained to it? If he is not under the auspices of a higher force, how could he be in a position of authority? Such a ruler is blinded by his illicit success and believes that anything is possible simply because he wills it.

What happens is just what happens to a very big boat. The rudder breaks and the ship of state is no longer under human-directed control but rather is now in the hands of the "sea". Of course all will pretend that the man at the helm is still in control (else they tend to be shot, for this is most certainly a despotic government).

A government run by elected representatives is slow to change and does so timidly. Harsh changes even under radically changing conditions are rare. In fact, the only legitimate deficiency of this form might be its inability to move swiftly when conditions warrant quickness of motion. This is not, however, a common occurrence. Good planning obviates quickness of foot. We need but change slowly if we can see far enough ahead.

The best government is then that government which keeps me from gaining such employment. For certainly I would sling the nation's warheads in the manner of a popcorn machine without its lid ... believing sincerely that a few hundred millions dead would best insure the continuance and good fortune of civilization in general. ;o)

I'll teach 'em a lesson ...
Eat this ! ...
Take that ... and that ...
Oh ... you want some too? ...
